Every year on June 5th, countries across the globe observe World Environment Day. It is celebrated under the auspices of the United Nations, which issues guidelines and instructions to member countries.

The United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972 to commemorate the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The first World Environment Day was held in 1974 in Spokane, United States, with the theme “Only One Earth.” Since then, it has been observed annually with a different theme. Every year, a different country celebrates World Environment Day as the host of the events. India hosted World Environment Day twice, in 2011 and 2018, with the themes Forests: Nature at Your Service and Beat Plastic Pollution.

The National Security Council in India has assumed responsibility for World Environment Day events. Since 1999, it has managed campaigns on an annual basis. The Indian National Security Council (NSC) distributes promotional materials to the general public and its members, such as environment day badges, banners, posters, and informational booklets. Every year, the NSC material benefits over 500 government and non-government organisations, including municipalities.

How is World Environment Day Celebrated?

Environment Day is observed with the primary goal of making efforts to preserve the natural state of the environment without causing harm to it. Greener initiatives in the workplace help organisations support the WED. Issues such as carbon footprint, waste disposal, deforestation, and so on are addressed, and people commit to new methods that promote environmental growth.

Manufacturing industries and other businesses are given guidelines that instruct or advise them to adopt environmentally friendly policies. Many firms come forward to demonstrate their commitment to a safe and healthy environment, as well as to minimise human impacts on it.

Any ordinary person can take part in

World Environment Day by committing to an eco-friendly lifestyle, says Mr Yash Birla.

Use alternative energy sources, avoid resource overuse, and plant a sapling in your neighbourhood. On World Environment Day, you can participate in thousands of such activities.

The commemoration of World Environment Day is critical in keeping people aware of the importance of environmental protection and committing to it. Yash Birla asserts that it is essential that we take care of the environment that we live in because it causes a significant impact on our overall health. To ensure a healthy and long life, preserving nature is the first step. This day is a platform for the world to come together and make necessary plans on a critical issue of environmental protection.
